New Zealand Councillor’s Report
State of the Market Like always, I believe Trenchless Technology is still trying to gain acceptance and credibility as an alternative to conventional excavation and while we are making headway, there is still a long way to go.
The development of HDD in Australia
A conversation with Andy Lukas, Australian HDD pioneer HDD – horizontal directional drilling – was developed from oilfield drill control techniques. It set out to solve the problem of installing a pipeline beneath an obstacle where conventional trenching was difficult or impossible. By sending the pipeline below particular geographical features, there is no environmental risk or other effect.
Automatisation of HDD drill rigs: an history summary
Dr. Hans-Joachim Bayer, Kohlberg, GermanyDuring the 1990s, European manufacturers and affiliated research institutes paid particular attention to the automatisation of HDD. This article provides an overview of the fundamental and extensive European technology developments in HDD automatisation.

Infrastructure Constructions completes major Telstra contract
Infrastructure Constructions recently secured a major Telstra project to relocate 7 km of Single Mode Optical Fibre and 3 km of copper cable around the Norwest Business Park across the intersection of Old Windsor Road and Norwest Boulevard. This project was a major challenge for Infrastructure Constructions due to the location, ground conditions (rock) and interaction required between all the current construction companies working in the area.

A new age dawns on pipeline inspection technology
As demand on infrastructure increases so too does the necessity for maintenance and the requirement for long term sustainability. Asset owners have been adopting preventative maintenance programs as the best and most economical means of accomplishing this for many years and few would disagree that an emphasis on systematic condition assessment is of paramount importance.

Successful water main installation for UEA
UEA recently completed a water trunk main installation at a new development site in the Sydney suburb of Rhodes for CLM Excavations on behalf of Sydney Water. The project required UEA to install 140 m of 560 mm polyethylene (PE 100 PN 16) under a railway line using Horizontal Directional Drilling.
Wagga City cuts costs not roots
Supervisor of sewer operations for the City of Wagga Wagga, Len Kennedy, is changing the way things are done. Len has initiated a targeted pro-active program of treating branch lines and short sections of mains with Vaporooter foaming sewer root inhibitor in problem areas in order to reduce sewer chokes and overflows which cause inconvenience to customers and result in the excessive cost of emergency response call outs.
Multipurpose units provide better service for spot repairs
A range of Trenchless Technologies for the rehabilitation of sewer and stormwater pipes is now available in Australia. Some of these techniques are capable of lining over 400 m of pipe in a single installation. But what happens when there are only one or two areas in a length of a pipeline that need repair? Sometimes it can be more cost effective to fix just these areas with a spot repair, especially if the spot repair uses Trenchless Technology.
