The water and wastewater industry in Australia has seen some major changes in the way in which it is organised.

Within Australia the states have divided the responsibilities for water and wastewater services differently. In some states, the service is state-owned, in others they are council-owned, and some are corporate entities.

In Part 1, we covered the water and wastewater services in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, ACT and the Northern Territory. In Part 2 we look at Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand.

South East Queensland, much like Tasmania, has experienced major reform in the establishment of three major water entities.

These reforms are essential to understand as it will change who contractors are dealing with as well as financing for infrastructure projects.

In New Zealand the Ministry controls services, while some regional councils are able to exercise some power in their areas.
