Sydney Water has awarded Insituform’s Australian operation two contracts for small and medium diameter sewer and stormwater pipeline rehabilitation. The combined three-year term contracts are Insituform’s largest award in Australia to date and have a budgeted value of $A32 million, with the potential for additional works.
The awards are part of Sydney Water’s SewerFix Program, which is a three-year sewer and stormwater rehabilitation program designed to protect public health and reduce the number of sewage overflows reaching the environment. Insituform’s $A32 million contract is a portion of the $A83 million award shared by three contractors.
Over the next three years, Insituform will employ up to 53 staff members in the Sydney area. Insituform will also work with local subcontractors to complete these projects.
Insituform’s core technology, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), and the company’s next generation CIPP solution, the iPlus Infusion lining system, will be used to rehabilitate pipelines in urban, coastal, national park and environmentally sensitive areas.

Sydney Water, Australia’s largest water utility covering over 12,700 square kilometres, provides drinking water, recycled water, wastewater services and stormwater services to more than four million people.
Insituform Pacific’s General Manager– Australia Daniel Gamboa said “We have completed over 25 pipeline rehabilitation projects during the past two years in Australia and continue to expand our capabilities in this market as well as providing innovative solutions which were not previously available to our customers. We congratulate Sydney Water on their ambitious environmental and economic sewer rehabilitation program and look forward to working with them on these projects.”
Insituform’s Vice President, Asia/Pacific Daniel Cowan said “Over the past two years, we have delivered a diverse range of gravity and pressure pipe rehabilitation projects as a joint venture partner with VSL. In order to expand our visibility in the Asia Pacific market, we have established Insituform Pacific Pty Limited and Insituform Asia Limited as wholly owned subsidiaries of Insituform Technologies, Inc. We currently have operations in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and India and are excited about our growth opportunities.” Mr Cowan relocated to Hong Kong earlier this year.
The award of the Sydney Water contract follows Insituform’s success in the Hunter Water term contract earlier this year.
Insituform Pacific was awarded the three-year contract to rehabilitate sewers within Hunter Water Corporation’s area of operations including the local government areas of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, Port Stephens, Dungog and the eastern parts of Singleton.
The contract, with a budgeted value of approximately $A8 million over three years, allows for the rehabilitation of sewers up to 375 mm in diameter on an as required basis, including the completion of emergency works. Sewers in some of the areas are in water-charged ground conditions with access holes located on private property, roads, factories, bushland with poor vehicle access, and in or around bodies of water.
While the contract has an initial three-year term, Hunter Water has the option of extending the contract term for an additional two years on a ‘one plus one’ year basis.
“These significant contracts give us an excellent foundation of work in NSW for the next three years which allows us to grow and invest in the business with confidence. While we work in several Australian states, these contracts provide the business with additional opportunities to permanently establish in other regions in order to better serve our clients in other states,” said Mr Gamboa.
