The Business Plan has four strategies, namely network development, training and education, guidelines and standards, and promotion. All of these were reviewed and it was agreed that they should remain as stated.

The objectives of these strategies were also discussed with the main areas of concern arising from training and education, and guidelines and standards.

The ASTT Council was eager to progress the development of guidelines and standards. Some very good work has already been undertaken in this area, but now is the time to try and fill in the gaps. Because the trenchless industry is so vast, it was agreed that the initial focus will be on the higher profile areas namely HDD, pipe bursting and microtunnelling.

Training and education were discussed at length regarding actions the ASTT could take to facilitate national involvement in newly created competencies. Several good suggestions were tabled including acknowledging individuals that have already completed the Certificate 3 in Civil Construction (Trenchless Technology) and Certificate 3 in Drilling (Trenchless Technology) in Trenchless Australasia, similar to how we acknowledge our corporate members.

Other suggestions included the development of a brochure explaining what trenchless competency training was all about, how to go about it, the benefits of achieving the Certificate 3 qualification and who the registered training organisations are in each state to contact.

The Council also recognised that the ASTT is limited in its approach to training and education because client organisations should also be insisting that only competent operators are permitted to work on and around their assets, and the tenders they let should make provision for this.

Solutions to these key issues will begin to be developed almost immediately with progress reported in future editions of Trenchless Australasia.
