Drilline installs Australia’s first potable CIPP pressure liner

Even though the Nordipipe System is used and certified in Canada and the UK as well as several European and Asian countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore, the first step was to obtain the Australian AS/NZ 4020 potable water certificate. This was obtained in May 2007 paving the way for Drilline and CPT to start marketing the system for use in Australia and New Zealand.

It didn’t take long to find the first customer in need of a trenchless solution to repair and refurbish their water supply – in fact the water supply was the lifeline to a major brewery. The ageing cement lined steel water pipe ran right through the middle of the brewery, crisscrossed by hundreds of other pipes and services making it virtually impossible to dig and replace, not to mention the disruption to the day to day activities.

The first task was to install a 300 mm diameter bypass line to ensure the brewery could operate while the refurbishment of the main took place. Using Aquamine and its unique coupling and locking system, Drilline was able to install a 500 m, 300 mm diameter, 500 Kpa pressure main under several critical driveways and around four 90 degree bends without the need for thrust blocks in one eight hour day.

Having secured an ongoing water supply, Drilline then undertook CCTV and laser profiling and cleaning of the main, and established the exact size of the lining required as the existing main had been repaired over the years and changed size in several locations.

Once all details were known and the liners had been ordered to suit, Drilline – under the supervision of CPT’s Nordipipe Technical Manager – successfully installed Australia’s first CIPP pressure linings. Two 385 mm diameter and one 305 mm diameter liners, totaling just under 500 m were installed and re-commissioned.

Following the success of Nordipipe in Europe, Canada and Asia, where CIPP pressure lining is a daily occurrence, the Australian market for pressure lining using CIPP for potable and non-potable water is about to take off.
