Trenchless reduces Sydney Water’s waste

Sydney Water has marked a number of waste reduction achievements in 2008-09, including:

  • Switching from open-cut to trenchless methods where possible to reduce the amount of spoil created during pipeline construction
  • Using pipe bursting methods on renewal work to reduce waste generation and spoil disposal
  • Reducing the amount of waste generated from its Priority Sewerage Program by using pressure sewerage technology instead of gravity systems where possible.

Reuse and recycling rates for waste dropped to 53 per cent in 2008-09, compared to 86 per cent in the previous year. However, this was mainly due to the bulk of soil from the water mains renewals and replacement flows construction project which was contaminated and could not be reused.
