Undergrounding power lines in Pilbara

The Pilbara Underground Power Project will be managed by Horizon Power and will see overhead powerlines placed underground in a number of towns in the region. The project will not only protect power lines from the damage caused during extreme weather events which frequent the region but also improve the safety, reliability and quality of the power supply.

“In an area like the Pilbara, reliable power is integral to the success of the local industry,” said Horizon Power’s Managing Director Rod Hayes.

The project will also include a distribution voltage upgrade in Karratha from 11 kilovolts to 22 kilovolts in an attempt to meet predicted future population demands.

“The voltage upgrade will provide increased power capacity required for Karratha to expand under its vision to become a city,” Mr Hayes said.

While it has been identified that horizontal directional drilling (HDD) will be used for the undergrounding, the project is currently in the concept design phase. The detailed design is expected to be finished in May with works on the project to commence in Karratha in July. The Pilbara Underground Power Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
