Directional drilling for Devil Creek

DrillTec is currently undertaking shoreline crossing works using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) as part of Apache Energy’s Devil Creek Development Project at Forty Mile Beach. The shoreline crossing works at Gnoorea Point will connect the offshore section of the pipeline with the onshore sections via a 1,850 metre buried pipeline.

Tapping the gas field

The Apache Energy and Santos Reindeer Gas Field is located in offshore permit WA-209-P, approximately 80 kilometres from The Port of Dampier, Western Australia. The field was discovered in 1997 and has a gross recoverable resource range of 410 to 640 petajoules of gas.

Drilling under the shoreline commenced in late February and is continuing under 24 hour operations for twelve weeks.

The crossing works are part of a 110 kilometre onshore and offshore gas supply pipeline, which will transport gas from the Reindeer field to the Devil Creek Gas Plant. When commissioned, the Devil Creek Gas Plant will provide up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day of dry natural gas and 80 kilolitres per day of gas condensate.

Contractor John Holland commenced construction of the project in September 2009 with works expected to be completed by late 2011. The development is expected to have a life of 20 to 30 years.
