Relining for Back Creek Siphon pipeline

Construction work has started on the pipeline, which was originally built in 1921.

The 600 m pipeline transfers water from the Coliban catchment storages in Malmsbury to meet the water supply needs of customers in Castlemaine and Bendigo, via the rural Coliban Main Channel.

Coliban Water General Manager Infrastructure Dharma Dharmabalan said “We will be installing a new 1.3 m diameter pipe inside the existing 1.5 m diameter concrete pipeline.”

“This is to ensure the historical significance of the original pipeline is maintained and limits the excavation needed along the pipeline route.”

The current pipeline has exceeded the end of its useful life and new methods were being used to upgrade the pipeline to keep its historical integrity intact.

The project is due for completion at the end of August.
