RMC: on the right track

The City of Darebin recently completed a major project to upgrade tram tracks in the Melbourne suburbs of Westgarth, Preston and Reservoir. Works involved upgrading tram stops and making major changes to the road environment to make tram travel along this route quicker and easier.

As part of the works, Reservoir Maintenance Contractors (RMC) was called in to clean drains along the tram route, with approximately 15 km of drains cleared.

The team from RMC used the SV3750JB 8×4 Recycler unit they acquired from Spoutvac Australia – which is a combination drain cleaning/industrial vacuum unit – to complete the job.

The unit is intended primarily for cleaning sanitary and storm sewer lines, laterals, drainage lines, catch basins and manholes.

One of the main advantages of this unit is the fact that it can clean sewer lines with high-pressure water, and then reclaim this water for reuse. The other advantage it provides is that it is able to vacuum up large particles of high density material through the 152 mm vacuum hose.

The project, which took around three weeks to complete, involved the cleaning of all the drains with the Recycler unit. Following this process, cameras were then inserted down approximately 80 manholes throughout the network to assess their condition.

For these inspections, the IBAK Panoramo SI manhole camera was used. This camera provides a complete evaluation of the condition of manholes, and can be viewed immediately as a live picture. It also allows for all-round inspection of the manhole. With this camera there is no need to stop the camera, pan, tilt or rotate as the camera encapsulates it all in one passing, thereby making it much quicker to complete the survey.

Following the completion of these works from RMC, the City of Darebin was very impressed by the visual report RMC was able to provide, and its timely completion of the project.

RMC owns a range of specialist vacuum loading and recovery vehicles which are capable of pumping, collecting and disposing of a large variety of hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, sludges and powders.

Using its specialised vacuum loading equipment, RMC can carry out emergency spill response to clean up sewerage overflows and potential pollution issues. They also offer an ongoing maintenance programming service to ensure clients’ drains are cleared regularly to avoid overflows and flooding issues.
