Tunnelling

TERRATEC makes breakthrough in Delhi

The breakthrough marks the completion of tunnelling for the line between the Kashmere Gate and Lal Quila Stations, after the initial drive began on 26 December 2014.

The tunnel has a maximum depth of 16 m and is approximately 1,351 m long.

To complete the work TERRATEC used a specifically designed earth pressure balance shield tunnel boring machine (EPTBM), integrating innovative new features such as versatile cutting tools and a built-in two-liquid backfilling system.

TERRATEC and joint venture partners Metrostroy O.S. (Russia) and ERA Infra Ltd (India), as well as representatives from client company DMRC, were all present at the breakthrough ceremony.

As the Delhi Metro Phase-III project continues, TERRATEC plans to deploy eight further tunnel boring machines to work on 12 km of metro tunnel. All major tunnelling for the project should be completed by early 2016.
