The authority has contacted 21,000 residents and businesses along the proposed tunnel route and is offering information sessions in October and November for anyone who wishes to know more about the project. The Melbourne Metro Rail Project is the largest expansion of Melbourne’s rail infrastructure since the construction of the city loop. During the construction process residents can expect disruptions ranging from temporary noise and visual obstructions, through to changes in local infrastructure and, in some cases, acquisition of property. Acting Premier and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said “This consultation process is about starting open, honest and respectful conversations with people who may be affected by this critical project.” The 9 km twin rail tunnel will be constructed through the CBD and underneath the Yarra River and will allow trains to run more frequently and efficiently through the network. The total project cost is estimated to be $A9-11 billion with over $A4.5 billion already secured by the Andrews Labor Government.
