Western Australia councillor’s report

With the construction cycle of the recent mining “÷boom’ coming to an end, there is no doubt that the heat in the civil construction market in WA has reduced. This was confirmed at the recent National CCF conference where Adrian Hart, Senior Manager – Infrastructure and Mining of BIS Schrapnel, spoke about the outlook for the civil construction industry in Australia. Whilst the overall outlook for Australia was promising with a number of infrastructure programs planned, unfortunately the outlook was less promising for WA. The “÷bust’ of the mining industry will affect the WA civil construction forecasts, with the next three to five years expected to be down on growth. Unless more infrastructure investment is planned, tougher times will be experienced in WA. Beyond that time it is expected to see good growth and investment return.

The recent No-Dig Down Under 2015 held at the Gold Coast proved to be another great conference and exhibition for the ASTT. It was good to see a number of WA ASTT members attending and supporting the conference and also attending the industry training courses that were held at the event. The Gold Coast was a terrific location and all stakeholders that I spoke with indicated that they had a great event. Well done to the ASTT and event partners Great Southern Press.

Minister for Water Mia Davies recently announced that 4 km of wastewater pipe will be refurbished in the Perth suburb of Victoria Park in the next year, as part of an ongoing program of work to reline and refurbish wastewater pipes across the State.
