Electric shock risks of electrical pits within the communications industry

The ingress of water into the pits has the potential to electrify the water contained in the pit and also within the switchboard.

A person may become exposed to 230 volts if using a conductive pit key that comes into contact with the water contained in the pit, while attempting to lift the lid or via direct contact with switchboard and water.

NULCA is seeking further clarification from asset owners, but does know that there are only selected pits affected and that the relevant asset owner is currently undertaking an audit and rectification program.

Ongoing manufacture and install has been rectified.

Until such time as all pits have been rectified and it is absolutely necessary to access these pits we suggest using a low voltage insulation glove adhering to AS2225:1994 that are within expiry dates.
