Sydney Water welcomes ACCC decision on wet wipes

The ACCC announced it had instituted Federal Court proceedings against Kimberly-Clark Australia and Pental Limited, alleging that that they had made false or misleading representations in relation to their wet wipe products supplied in Australia being marketed as ‘flushable’.

Sydney Water has been vocal in its opposition of the use of wet wipes in its infrastructure, with its ‘Keep wipes out of the pipes’ education program.

The report from the ACCC said “Consumers were led to believe that the products had similar characteristics to toilet paper, would break up or disintegrate in a timeframe and manner similar to toilet paper, and were suitable to be flushed down the toilet, when this was not the case.”

Sydney Water Senior Media and Public Relations Advisor Peter Hadfield said “Sydney Water supports the milestone announcement by the ACCC that they will take court action on flushable wipes.”

In 2016, the education program was awarded the Corporate Social Responsibility PR Campaign of the Year at the Asia-Pacific Communications Summit in Singapore.
