Rotaloc spiral wound liners have been installed to renew deteriorated sewers and culverts with diameters of 900 mm and larger for some 15 years. They have been installed firstly throughout Australia and New Zealand and then around the world.
The new development involving the reinforcement of the Rotaloc liner, with a continuous steel strip encased within each liner rib, has increased the capabilities of spiral wound lining solutions to cover a wider range of diameters for asset owners when looking at the rehabilitation of their deteriorated underground conduits.
The Rotaloc Steel Reinforced Liner has a stiffness more than 2.5 times greater than the standard Rotaloc with the additional advantage of having a smaller wall height. As Rotaloc is installed to contact the internal wall of the deteriorated conduit, the steel-reinforced option provides a larger lined diameter which means diameter reduction is reduced leading to greater flow capacity.
Interflow have successfully used the Rotaloc Steel Reinforced Liner to rehabilitate a 2.5 km long, 1,125 mm reinforced concrete sewer in Melbourne. The sewer reached depths of up to 26 m and had varied distances between access points of up to 360 m. The company has also used the product in the rehabilitation of rail culverts in Tasmania and are about to use the product for another client in Queensland.
The availability of SRLA’s Rotaloc Steel Reinforced Liner through Interflow means it now has an impressive addition to its spiral wound offering for deteriorated sewers and culverts with diameters from 150 – 3,000 mm. The liners are designed in accordance with recognised international standards and the appropriate configuration of liner is chosen to meet design requirements.
Interflow and SRLA
For more than 26 years, the relationship between Interflow and SRLA has facilitated the development of innovative solutions to advance the Trenchless Technology in Australasia and around the world. The success of this relationship resulted in Interflow and SRLA signing a new 20-year exclusive licence agreement. The agreement will see Interflow and SRLA continue to develop and install spiral wound liners throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Interflow has lined over 3,200 km of deteriorated sewers and other underground conduits with SRLA manufactured liners. The average length between maintenance holes is typically in the range of 50 – 100 m, meaning that up to 64,000 lengths of spiral wound lined sewers are currently in service in Australia and New Zealand.

International recognition
The credentials of these Australian developed spiral wound liners have been demonstrated by the national and international awards which both Interflow and SRLA have won. The most prestigious of these are as follows:
- Two International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) annual No-Dig Awards in 1997 and 2002 in the category ‘most important worldwide industry product development’. Awards to Ribsteel and Rotaloc, respectively.
- Two ISTT annual No-Dig Awards awarded to Interflow in the category of ‘Project of the Year’. Awarded for sewer lining projects carried out in Australia in 2010 and 2013.
- Two national Civil Contractors Federation ‘Earth Awards for Construction Excellence’, awarded to Interflow for sewer rehabilitation projects in 2004 and 2006.
- An Australia Water Association National Project Infrastructure Innovation Award in 2014.
- Five Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology Project of the Year Awards between 2007 and 2015.
This is an unrivalled record of achievement in the Trenchless Technology industry.
