The project is utilising trenchless relining technology to renew sections of the pipes, extending their lives and increase the reliability of the 80-year-old sewer mains.
The mains, which pass through the suburbs of Mentone, Parkdale and Mordialloc, service more than 5,600 properties in the area.
Construction has started at the northern end of the sewer and will progress to the south, with most of the works taking place between 8pm and 7am from Sunday to Thursday when flows are at their lowest, allowing crews to work safely in ‘dry’ sewers and minimising disruption to residents.
“Relining the existing sewers not only reduces the risk of blockage and service interruption in the future, but can also be undertaken without the need for costly and disruptive excavation,” said SE Water’s Acting General Manager for Asset Creation Rohan Ogier.
“It enables us to future-proof our network quickly and cost-effectively, while continuing to provide the services our customers expect.”
The works are anticipated to be completed sometime in mid-July.
