City West Water awards construction contract

The scope of the Spencer Street project involves the design and installation of 740 m of 400 mm and 1,400 mm diameter gravity sewer lines between Little Lonsdale Street and Flinders Lane, using a combination of trenchless methods to minimise the impact of construction above ground.

The project is part of the upgrade of Melbourne’s sewer systems to cater for the rapid growth in the CBD and increased population.

“The existing 300 mm diameter sewer along Spencer Street has served the city since 1896 and is approaching its full capacity,” said City West Water General Manager of Infrastructure and Delivery Maree Lang.

“Victoria in Future (2015) forecasts growth of approximately 60,000 new apartments in the CBD over the next 35 years, which includes approximately 14,000 apartments in the Spencer Street area.

“We are upgrading the sewer network to ensure it continues to provide safe and reliable sewer services to the world’s most liveable city.

“For the safety of pedestrians and workers, southbound traffic lanes will be impacted during the project, however through traffic, access to residential and business properties, as well as underground carparks, will be maintained.

“There will be no disruption to water or sewer services, and there will be no disruption to the tram network.

“City West Water is working closely with a number of stakeholders, including VicRoads, Melbourne Metro Rail Authority, City of Melbourne, Public Transport Victoria and Yarra Trams to coordinate the streamlined delivery of the works and keep the community informed of the scheduled works.”

Early works started in August, while major works are scheduled to begin in October 2017. The project is anticipated to be completed in early 2019.
