South East Water starts main renewal in Melbourne’s south

Construction on the 10-week project started in early October along High Street between Williams Road and Grandview Grove, and involves the replacement of 500 m of cast iron water pipe originally laid in 1909, before the first trams travelled along the Prahran East route.

“As we plan for the future, and determine where to focus our investments, customers tell us that water service reliability and quality must remain our top priority,” said South East Water General Manager Asset Creation Charlie Littlefair.

“The existing cast iron main has served us well, but it’s time to update this important piece of infrastructure and ensure residents and businesses have a high quality supply they can rely on into the future.”

Construction will progress in three stages from the corner of Williams Road and High Street to the east towards Armadale.

South East Water said it is working with VicRoads, Yarra Trams and the local community to minimise disruption to residents and businesses in the area.

Last year South East Water replaced more than 33 km of water and 34 km of sewer pipelines and spent more than AU$25 million enhancing the reliability of its network.
