SA Water’s network upgrade project contends for award

The project has seen the capacity of the wastewater network that services a majority of the Adelaide CBD and the city’s southeastern suburbs upgraded.

It was nominated for the award due to the complexity of engineering and its emphasis on social sustainability.

The works were conducted on the Western Adelaide Wastewater Network and involved the installation of a new 2.5 km pipeline connecting an existing sewer main on War Memorial Drive to West Terrace.

The upgrade will transport increased sewage flows and reduce the potential for operation and odour issues, equipping the infrastructure to meet the expected demands of urban development and population growth.

Throughout the project, care was take to ensure that plans reflected SA Water’s commitment to limiting the impact on the community, Adelaide Park Lands environment, sites of Aboriginal significance and historic relics.

“This part of the sewer system supports an area that is fast becoming a development hub, and this upgrade was imperative in order to maintain a reliable and resilient network,” said Water and the River Murray Minister Ian Hunter.

“During all stages of this project, SA Water and its contractors made a concerted effort to give consideration to minimising impacts on the surrounding area and people.

“This included mapping the pipeline route and using hydrovac excavation to avoid all significant trees and their roots; directional drilling under arterial roads, rail lines and the River Torrens; and the use of ground penetrating radar before beginning excavation to detect buried structures, such as the remains of heritage building foundations.”
