SA Water plans more water main replacements

The four-year program will see more than 370 km of water main replaced over a four-year period to reduce the number of main breaks and leaks.

SA Water recently achieved a milestone of replacing more than 100 km of water main throughout South Australia.

To reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers and road users, SA Water will replace around 297 m of water main along Tolley Road in St Agnes, 747 m along the Port Wakefield Highway in Korunye, and 315 m of water main along Mansfield and Boffa Street in Goodwood.

SA Water General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said that these sections of pipe were prioritised for replacement after recent breaks or leaks.

“Water main incidents are typically triggered by environmental factors like weather and soil movement, so we can’t completely stop them from happening, but we’re fully committed to reducing their incidence and impact on our customers,” said Mr Gobbie.

“The new pipe will be made of PVC, which is flexible and more resistant to the movement caused by the area’s reactive soils than existing, rigid cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“In this instance, the new pipe will be laid using a combination of traditional trenching techniques and directional drilling to reduce excavation and the impact on road users with some temporary traffic diversions in place from time to time.”
