West Gate Tunnel project’s final design doubles tunnelling works

The Victorian Government announced today that it and Transurban had reached contractual close with the CPB ContractorsJohn Holland joint venture (JV) selected to build the tunnel.

The decision allows early works construction to begin next month.

As a result of the amendments, the cost of constructing the project has been increased to AU$6.7 billion.

“The time for talking is over – this project will deliver a long-overdue alternative to the West Gate Bridge, create thousands of jobs and construction starts next month,” said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

The design and construction works include the widening of the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes between the M80 Ring Road and Williamstown Road, a 2.8 km eastbound tunnel and 4 km westbound tunnel under Yarraville.

CPB, a CIMIC Group company, said it expected the project would generate an estimated AU$2.49 in revenue for the company.

Speaking on developments, CIMIC Group CEO Michael Wright said, “Delivering complex roads and transport projects are core capabilities for CIMIC and CPB Contractors.

“We are the largest tunnelling contractor in Australia, with considerable experience in creating transforming infrastructure such as the West Gate Tunnel.

“We are privileged to be working with Transurban and the Victorian Government to deliver this exciting project that is so integral to the State’s vision for sustainable roads systems, and so vitally important for its people and communities.”

John Holland CEO Joe Barr said the project would provide important benefits to the people of Melbourne.

“In providing an alternative route to the West Gate Bridge and direct access to the port, the project will significantly decrease traffic congestion, improve productivity, remove numerous trucks from local roads and reduce travel times for motorists,” said Mr Barr.

The Government said it would order the tunnel boring machines which will be used on the project “in the next few weeks”.

The project is expected to be completed in 2022.
