ITS PipeTech completes Australia’s largest point liner installation

Following consultations with its European partner Bodenbender, the company designed a rehabilitation and repair solution for the DN 1500 pipeline that limited disruption to the community and saved time and money for a local client.

Trenchless relining specialists ITS PipeTech recently completed a challenging stormwater rehabilitation project in the Illawarra region of NSW, which involved the installation of the company’s point-lining system to rehabilitate a pipeline for a local council.

The client came to ITS PipeTech requiring a cost-effective, trenchless solution for the rehabilitation and repair a DN 1500 pipeline. The challenging requirements of the project led the company to contact its European partner and supplier, Bodenbender, for the procurement of a packer capable of achieving the task.

After consultations between the two, ITS PipeTech and Bodenbender presented the council with a solution – rehabilitating displacements within the pipeline – they were confident would achieve the desired outcome for the client.

ITS PipeTech’s solution recommended that the point-liner only be installed on seven sections of the pipeline, where critical defects had been identified by the local council. This allowed the company to repair at least three times as many defects for the same budget, when to compared to other repair methods.

The installation of the point liner was to be accompanied by the use of robotic, CCTV and cleaning services in order to provide the municipality with a ‘full circle’ solution, which also included maintenance and rehabilitation.

The diameter of the pipeline requiring rehabilitation varied from DN 375 up to DN 1500. To complete the project, ITS PipeTech followed the same principals and processes it would have had it been working on a small diameter point liner.

The project area was located within a densely populated residential area, surrounded by local shops and schools, meaning that traditional means of rehabilitation would cause major disruptions to traffic and the community, as well as cause significant noise pollution.

ITS PipeTech planned the project so that all of the relining works, and the associated site footprint, would not take place or be situated on roads, meaning zero disruptions to the local area.

Preparations begin

Before the rehabilitation could begin, the pipeline had to be prepared. The process included high pressure water jetting to clean and remove any foreign debris or sediment that could affect the adhesion of the point liner to the host pipe, as well as to the headwall area where preparation of the fibreglass was to be undertaken.

CCTV inspection of the asset was then used to confirm the reported defect had been correctly identified and to capture pre-repair video footage, which would later form part of ITS PipeTech’s comprehensive quality assurance.

Following inspection, the company’s six-man crew prepared the fibreglass and resin amounts required, before continuing to install the liner into the pipeline for inflation. The liner was then left to cure in the pipeline for a number of hours.

Seven lengths of DN 1500 point-liner were successfully installed over a four-day period. By using Trenchless Technology rehabilitation, as compared to a conventional civil excavation processes, the project caused no disturbances to the environment with all works being undertaken within a 10 m2 area and all material contained and disposed of within minutes of application.

Industry leader

ITS PipeTech says the completion of the rehabilitation proves it is the industry leader in providing point-lining solutions for the repair of sewer, stormwater and industrial pipelines.

The point-lining system is a proven, tested and localised pipeline repair product for the renewal of gravity pipelines with diameters from 80 mm up to those that previously had a diameter of 1,050 mm. ITS PipeTech’s point-liner repairs are compliant with the ‘AS2566 – Flexible buried pipelines’ standard, which stipulates a 50-year design life. ITS PipeTech says these DN 1500 point-liner repairs are the first of their kind in the diameter range within Australia to date.
