MAC System arrives Down Under

The MAC System is an extensometer that uses non-destructive testing to provide data for the structural assessment of pipelines and aid in the selection of a rehabilitation methodology.

Issues with hydraulic capacity, leak tightness and stability are three reasons large trunk sewers may need rehabilitation.

Where hydraulic performance, groundwater ingresses and wastewater leaks are more easily observable, failing stability of the fabric requires the collection of detailed data to assess the pipe condition, along with the surrounding soil system, before a course of action can be planned.

The MAC System provides this information to operators; it is able to examine the stability beyond the pipe and allows users to test the stability of concrete and masonry sewers, to locate if and where the sewer length has any weaknesses.

The system has previously been used by UK utility Wessex Water to identify and prioritise structural defects in large diameter tunnel linings.
