Cape secures UPP contracts

The project, which has been running since 1996, involves the replacement of overhead powerlines with underground power infrastructure in areas of the state.

In January 2017, 17 project packages were selected to form round six of the project.

Cape has been awarded the Floreat East and Floreat West packages, which comprises 57 km of HDD, power pole removal and street light installation in an area with more than 1,780 homes.

“Cape has a long history working for Western Power which started over 20 years ago when the business was named Underground Services Australia,” said Cape CEO Peter Rowles.

“This award reaffirms our position as a market leader in the installation of underground utilities here in Western Australia.

“Cape’s strength is in our diversified service offering which allows us to operate in multiple markets and allows us to provide long term employment opportunities for our people.”

In 1996, a UPP committee – comprising the State Government’s Public Utilities Office, Western Power and the WA Local Government Association – was established to manage the program to convert to underground power infrastructure after significant damage to the overhead networks during severe storms in 1994.

Local governments can nominate areas for conversion; round one of the UPP took place in 1998.

Cape is expected to commence work on the packages this month, with construction planned for completion within approximately 14 months.
