Interflow saves suburb from sinkhole

The team installs the Expanda liner.

Initial investigations by the City of Swan found the sinkhole to be the result of a 900 mm drainage pipe under Benara Road, Caversham that had leaked at joint locations as the creek crossing was almost at capacity with water and mud.

Immediate attention was necessary as the sinkhole was growing in size and posed a danger to road-users and pedestrians.

Interflow was able to fix the problem by cleaning, relining and grouting the pipe with a 23 m Rib Loc Expanda liner.

After grouting and sealing the drain, Interflow said the pipeline had another 50 or more years of service life.

“It was a pleasure working with the City of Swan Engineering team to find a solution for this unique problem,” said Interflow WA Operations Manager Stephen Thomson.

“We work on the prevention side too. Interflow can check storm water culverts for potential problems and work towards asset management strategies to economically extend the life of underground assets.”

The company said infrastructure asset and network owners should employ maintenance programs over CCTV contracts, noting that these contracts are limited in their design to capture raw footage for analysis and grading.

Interflow’s recommended alternative is to integrate this activity into a turn-key scenario so that a delivery partner may perform cleaning, CCTV surveys, condition assessment, suggestions and rehabilitation.

Interflow WA Business Development Manager Sylvain Cabanel said the company can manage the maintenance program from start to finish.

“Using our turn-key solutions and having Interflow carry out assessment and recommendation tasks frees our customers from the heavy workload,” said Mr Cabanel.

“Customers only need to review and assess the work that Interflow recommends.”
