City West Water has announced that there will be a three-month road closure of two southbound lanes on Spencer Street to allow a 9 m deep shaft to be excavated to retrieve the MTBM when it completes its 600 m drive and to facilitate the connection of the new system.

Pipes have been installed at Lonsdale Street, using hydraulic pipe jacking to push the pipe into place at a depth of 8 to 12 m below Spencer Street.

“The retrieval of the tunnel borer and connection to the existing sewer line are critical steps in the project timeline, bringing us closer to project completion,” said City West Water Project Delivery Manager Kate Houlden.

“The three-month closure will allow our crews to complete works at the Flinders Lane site in ‘one hit’ to reduce overall disruption to the CBD.

“We understand that works of this scale are very disruptive, and we are working as fast as we can to get the job done to ensure our sewerage system can continue to support our growing city.”
