SA Water receives top Digital Utility award

The inaugural award recognises utilities that have showcased the best use and implementation of digital technologies, tools and processes across their organisation; it was awarded to two utilities, SA Water and Horizon Power.

SA Water received the award as recognition of its position as an industry leader on integrating digital and smart technologies with infrastructure to better manage its complex network.

The utility has incorporated new and emerging technologies – including digital sensors, the internet-of-things and accessibility using smart devices – to improve asset management planning and response.

The judges recognised SA Water’s smart water network, which has been installed across Adelaide’s central business district.

The smart water network digitally monitors assets using acoustic censors, pressure and flow data, smart meters and water quality sensors, enabling the utility to quickly identify anomalies and faults, reduce disruption during unplanned works and improve service delivery.

“Empowering our own people with improved digital systems is also changing the way we deliver services to our customers – and safety to our workers,” said SA Water General Manager Customer Delivery Kerry Rowlands.

“Paper trails are history for our field crews who now use a custom-built app to dispatch jobs to field staff who can update jobs as they arrive, undertake the repair and complete it.

“Our customers’ needs and expectations will always be our number one focus, but this award is a wonderful recognition of our teams’ efforts in the digital space.”
