The name change follows an announcement by the Victorian Government which outlined RPV’s role in investigating options for a high-speed rail link between Melbourne and Geelong as part of planning for a future rail link to Melbourne Airport.
The new name reflects the state-wide scope of transport infrastructure projects being delivered for Victorians, and will still be overseen by the Office of the Coordinator General, within the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.
The MMRA was initially established in 2015 for the construction of the AU$11 billion Metro Tunnel Project, which will use four tunnel boring machines to create twin 9 km tunnels along five new underground stations in Melbourne.
It has since expanded its scope of project deliveries.
In 2016, it was announced that the MMRA would deliver the Ballarat Line Upgrade; now, it will deliver the entire scope of the AU$1.7 billion Regional Rail Revival Program, along with the investigation of the high-speed rail link between Melbourne and Geelong.
The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will include AU$50 million for detailed investigations of fast rail infrastructure upgrades, costs and train requirements.
“This vital work will help determine the best way to deliver high-speed rail to Geelong as part of the Melbourne Airport Link,” said Victorian Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.
“This is about ensuring any link to the airport delivers better services for Geelong and regional Victoria.”
