The works, which commenced on 16 May 2018, will see the contractor reline 1.5 km of damaged and at-risk sections of the network with a steam cured polyvinyl chloride (PVC) liner, with pipe sections ranging from 150 to 600 mm in diameter.
The program began on 30 April and has already resulted in 3.5 km of sewer main relined in the neighbouring town Stanthorpe.
According to the project concept approval, relining is designed to extend the life of the sewer systems for up to 50 years, while deferring the cost of full replacement.
In the second quarter of the 2017–18 financial year, SDRC allocated AU$300,000 for the relining works for around 5 km of high-priority mains in the region after an inflow and infiltration study indicated that the shallow lines created a smaller capacity system with an increased risk of damage.
The program will prevent the infiltration of stormwater and ground water into the sewage network, which would risk flooding resulting in overflows impacting the environment.
