The sewage system in Hawthorn, east of Melbourne’s CBD, includes some pipes that are more than 100 years old, that collect and transport sewage flows to Melbourne Water’s Werribee or Carrum sewage treatment plants for treatment or disposal.
After inspecting the system, more than 50 km of pipe was found to be old, in poor condition or had recently experienced multiple blockages.
The project will extend the operational life of rehabilitated pipes by up to 50 years and reduce the likelihood of sewage spills during heavy storms.
To complete the works as soon as possible, Yarra Valley Water has engaged two contractors – Abergeldie Watertech and Interflow – to carry out works simultaneously.
In addition Yarra Valley Water’s sewer improvement works, Melbourne Water will also invest AU$100 milling in a relining and manhole rehabilitation program for 15 km of sewer infrastructure across Melbourne from 2018 to 2021.
Hawthorn sewer improvement works started in December 2017 and are scheduled for completion by mid-2018.
