The existing bores, which at 45 years of age had reached the end of their service life, were replaced with two new bores connecting Capel with a water treatment plant and doubling the supply capacity to 3 million L/d to local homes and businesses.
The AU$3.7 million project also included minor upgrades to the water plant and form a part of the McGowan Government’s planned AU$59.8 million water and wastewater infrastructure spend in the southwest region of WA in the 2018–19 period.
As part of the its urban water bore regulations, the WA Government specifies that bores are constructed and documented by Australian Drilling Industry Association licensed drillers.

Approximately 50 WA workers were employed during the project, including 15 local subcontractors.
The supply upgrades took place alongside Water Corporation’s Waterwise Towns Program, which WA Minister for Water Dave Kelly said is key to securing Capel’s water supply.
“Replacing the old bores in Capel will ensure the town continues to have a secure water supply, and the increased capacity of the new bores will help meet times of peak demand,” said Mr Kelly.
“I congratulate the residents of Capel for also playing their part in securing their water supply by participating in the Waterwise Towns Program, which will result in significant, long term water savings in the town.
“The willingness of residents to take part in the program shows an appreciation of how crucial it is to save water when climate change continues to impact the southwest of WA.”
