Utility selects preferred construction bidder

The New Zealand utility selected the GhellaAbergeldie Harker Joint Venture (JV) to deliver the 13 km wastewater tunnel from Western Springs to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The project has been on Watercare’s agenda for a number of years and is part of the utility’s NZ$5.8 billion (AU$5.5 billion) budget to expand and upgrade infrastructure over the next 10 years.

Tenders were submitted by shortlisted contractors in September, which, in addition to the GhellaAbergeldie Harker JV, included CPB Contractors,  Pacific Networks (comprising McConnell DowellFletcher Construction and Obayashi) and VINCI JV (comprising VINCI Construction Grands ProjetsHEB Construction and Soletanche Bachy).

Watercare CEO Raveen Jaduram said the Board of Directors approved the Central Interceptor team’s request to move forward with the JV because it represented the best overall value for Auckland.

“Over the next two months, we will continue our due diligence, working with the JV on a range of conditions and issues relating to their bid,” said Mr Jaduram.

“If the conditions and issues can be successfully worked through, the Central Interceptor team will take a recommendation to our Board of Directors in the first quarter of 2019.

“If the conditions and issues cannot be successfully worked through, then we will start liaising with the second bidder – who cannot be named at this stage.”

Construction will begin next year and continue until 2025.
