The two-year City West Water project – completed ahead of schedule and within budget – has increased the capacity of the 122-year-old sewer to 25 times the capacity of the existing one.
In order to install the infrastructure, project delivery partner Quinn Civil and its sub-contractor Bothar Boring used a 9 m long, 1.5 m diameter microtunnel boring machine to install more than 700 m of new sewer main 11 m underground in Melbourne’s CBD.
Crews worked weekends and around the clock for over a year to complete the construction of the sewer, with minimal disruption to commuters.
Its completion has been commemorated with a plaque laid underground in the sewer.
The upgraded sewer is now connected and working, ensuring safe and reliable service to residents and workers at a time of unprecedented and rapid population growth along Spencer Street.
This constitutes a milestone for the utility’s 10-year capital improvements plan for Melbourne to meet future demands and population expansion for the next 35 years.

“Especially to the local community and businesses, visitors to the city and the countless commuters who showed great patience and tolerance while works have been underway.
“It was, without doubt, a massive team effort.”
