Metro Tunnel works progressing

Last year, the Victorian Government awarded the Rail Infrastructure Alliance a AU$1 billion works package for the AU$11 billion project which commenced shortly after.

The alliance comprises CPB ContractorsJohn HollandAECOM, as well as project owner Rail Projects Victoria and rail franchisee Metro Trains Melbourne.

Major construction will take place in March at the South Yarra site, where the eastern tunnel entrance will be located, where works will be focused on creating the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft.

Works will also continue to take place at the TBM support site on Edmund Herring Oval, south of the city’s CBD, with works at the site to continue until the end of April 2019.

In Kensington, construction is also moving forward at the side of the western tunnel entrance, where utility location is taking place in the rail corridor between Kensington Station and Maribyrnong River in site preparation and service investigation works.

From late March to early May, to support the construction of State Library station, sewer relocation works will take place on Little La Trobe Street in the CBD precinct.

This will include excavation, boring a new sewer line, installation of pipes and pits, backfilling and road reinstatement.

Around 1,000 people will work on the Rail Infrastructure Alliance package, including almost 100 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets.

Construction of the Metro Tunnel is expected to be completed in 2025.
