Coliban’s sewer network comprises 1,957 km of pipeline, with the utility investing AU$1.2 million in renewals from 2017 to 2018.
Keeping with its commitment to maintain premium service and update its assets, in 2019 it will continue its ongoing renewals program.
During the project, 165 m of the sewer main, located near the Alexandra Fountain in Charing Cross, was rehabilitated using a Rib-Loc spiral wound PVC liner to restore the structural integrity and reliability of the sewer main.
The relining was carried out from sewer maintenance holes, eliminating the need to excavate and will increase the pipe’s life expectancy by at least another 50 years.
Manager Infrastructure Corey Bourne said the work would took place at night when there are low flows in the sewer.
“The sewer main is around 100 years old and will be renewed using a trenchless technique which enables us to keep the road open to traffic at all times and have no interruption to our customers’ sewer service,” he said.
“We are relining 88 m of 450 mm diameter pipe and 77 m of 375 mm diameter pipe, two of our large mains that transfer wastewater to our Bendigo Water Reclamation Plant in Epsom.
“The ongoing renewal of sewer mains across our region is an integral part of our operations to ensure we maintain and deliver services to customers.
“We inspect sewer mains by feeding through a CCTV camera. The footage is then reviewed to identify sections of the main that have been damaged and need to be renewed.”
Coliban has contracted Interflow and RSP Environmental Services to carry out the renewal and pipeline cleaning, respectively.
