The project to install a NZ$400 million (AU$378 million) water pipeline – Hunua 4 – from Manukau City to Auckland began in 2012 and is currently in service up to Epsom.
In October 2018, Watercare awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construction contract for the final section of the Hunua 4 Water Main Project, Section 11, valued at NZ$74 million (AU$70 million).
The scope of work comprises the construction of a 1.6 m diameter, 3.5 km pipeline from Market Road to the Khyber Pass Reservoirs in Auckland, primarily using microtunnelling.
A Herrenknecht microtunnel boring machine will install three of the five pipe sections under the road reserve.
According to McConnell Dowell, Section 11 of the pipeline will be the longest pipe jack completed in New Zealand.
The company said the project is underway and on schedule for microtunnelling to commence in the middle of this year.
