Snowy Hydro awards AU$5.1b contract

Snowy Hydro has finalised an engineer, procure and construct contract for the Clough, Salini Impregilo and Lane JV on the pumped hydro expansion project, designed to transition Australia to a renewable energy future.

According to the contract, Future Generation – which was named preferred contractor in February – will lead the civil and electro mechanical works, while Voith Hydro will deliver hydro-generation technology in the new underground power station.

The Snowy Mountains Scheme consists of 145 km of interconnected tunnels and pipelines and 80 km of aqueducts.

The Snowy 2.0 project will link the two existing dams within the scheme, Tantangara and Talbingo, through underground tunnels and an underground power station with pumping capabilities.

“We are extremely pleased by the award of this iconic project and are highly motivated to start delivering,” said Clough CEO and Managing Director Peter Bennett.

“Continuing to build on our relationship with Snowy Hydro Limited, we move past the preferred tenderer phase and now to final contract award.

“Our team is very excited to launch this project into its execution phase and to contribute our part into the advancement of Australia’s sustainable energy future.”

Mr Bennett said the company’s local expertise would be key to delivering this infrastructure project.

“Salini Impregilo is a major global player in the largescale infrastructure sector, and a world leader in hydropower and tunnelling,” he said.

“Combined with Clough’s Australian engineering and construction expertise, we create a partnership capability that is unparalleled.

“We look forward to delivering this project together for the benefit of the Australian community.”
