Downer using innovative methods in Tauranga

In order to minimise surface disruption and the impact on adjacent environments, Downer is using Pipetech’s PressureLining technology, which results in a new polyethylene pipe within the host pipe in need of maintenance or replacement.

A dye that the new pipe is drawn through before entering the host pipe causes a reduction in size by up to 10 per cent, which is enough to allow the new pipe to be drawn through without risk of obstruction or damage.

The pipe will then return to its original shape within a few days.

This method also eliminates the issue of how to secure the redundant asbestos cement pipe, as in Tauranga’s case pipe bursting was an unavailable option.

Pipetech was acquired by Downer in 2017.
