CRL celebrates completion of first stage

Working since December 2015, the Connectus – a joint venture of McConnell Dowell and Downer –has installed 362 reinforced concrete piles around the future CRL twin tunnels.

“Construction like this in the middle of a city is never easy for anyone – but we have taken a big step towards building a project that will change the way people can travel around our city,” said CRL Chief Executive Dr Sean Sweeney.

A total of 2,500 t of steel bar has been tied together and more than 10,000 m3 of concrete poured.

More than 1,600 concrete trucks were required for the construction of the tunnel box.

Removal of the temporary ground support, the relocation of the services and the backfilling of the trench is nearing completion.

Albert Street, starting from Wyndham Street, will be fully restored starting in mid-July.
