McConnell Dowell has been contracted for the design and construction of the Westland Milk Ocean Outfall (Package 2), a AU$26 million treated wastewater project located at Hokitika on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island.
Package 2 works consist of 800 m of trenchless pipeline; a 500 NB high density polyethylene pipe; a diffuser structure with a twin diffuser manifold; and installation of the onshore deaeration chamber.
The offshore pipeline is part of Westland Milk Products’ overall scheme to redirect its waste flows away from discharging into the Hokitika River.
Currently, Westland discharges its treated wastewater into the Hokitika River near its factory site; with the resource consent allowing this due to expire, the company took the opportunity to develop a more acceptable and environmentally sustainable solution.
The project will build on McConnell Dowell’s portfolio of major marine outfall pipeline construction in New Zealand and the company will continue to use trenchless tunnelling technology to minimise the risk of disruption.
Construction of the ocean outfall will comprise two packages: Package 1 will be land-based and Package 2 will be sea-based.
McConnell Dowell will commence Package 2 works in January 2020, with completion scheduled for January 2021.
