The Tauranga City Council’s Waiari Water Supply Scheme is a major project to deliver increased capacity and resilience for the city’s drinking water supply.
The latest phase of the project, a pipeline along Number One Road in Te Puke, has been awarded to Smythe Contractors with a winning bid due to the company’s use of directional drilling, which was selected for its ability to cause less impact on the area and local community.
Smythe began surveying and potholing along the roadside berm earlier last week with the next step being to install a fibreoptic cable duct of the proposed pipeline, which will be used to provide water to the drill rigs during operation.
Drilling will take place between 10 separate construction sites along Number One Road and Landscape Road.
Tauranga City Council General Manager for Infrastructure Nic Johansson said this marks an exciting stage of construction for the project.
“We are getting closer to the start of building the water treatment plant and intake,” said Mr Johansson.
“This is a foundation project for the Tauranga community and our team is working hard to continue progress while keeping the community informed and connected, as well as managing potential impacts of construction on those living, working and travelling in the area.”
