By 2040, the new infrastructure will manage sewage for up to 420,000 people from 39,400 houses, making it an integral part of the area’s sewerage system.
The project was executed using tunnel boring machines to dig the tunnel and then push lengths of pipe through the tunnel.
Yarra Valley Water used trenchless technology to reduce the construction impact on the environment and existing infrastructure.
Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Pat McCafferty said the new sewer is purpose built to service the area’s impending growth.
“When the outer north is completed, it will be bigger than Geelong,” said Mr McCafferty.
“We’ve invested heavily in this project now, so it’s built to last and we don’t have to do extra work to expand it in the foreseeable future.
The Kalkallo Creek Main Sewer is one of many important projects that Yarra Valley Water expects to deliver to the region.
