TBM ordered for major NZ project

Over the next six years, Watercare New Zealand is building the country’s largest ever wastewater tunnel, the Central Interceptor, in Auckland.

It will run between Western Springs and Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant while connecting to the existing wastewater network and diverting both flows and overflows into the tunnel.

The 13 km main tunnel will be excavated with a 5.45 m diameter earth pressure balanced (EPB) TBM from Herrenknecht, travelling underneath Auckland at depths of between 15 and 100 m.

The Central Interceptor sewer line is expected to reduce wastewater overflows in Auckland by 80 per cent while improving water quality of the city’s beaches and providing capacity in the wastewater network for future growth and development.

The works are being completed by a joint venture of Ghella and Abergeldie.
