Coliban Water completes $5m project

In September 2018, works began on the Heathcote Sewer Scheme Project as part of the larger Backlog Sewer Program, aiming to provide reticulated sewerage services to urban areas where septic tanks were still in use.

The construction included 10 km of sewer main and a sewer pump station with approximately 30 per cent of the mains installed using boring or directional drilling, reducing environmental impact.

Coliban Water Manager Infrastructure Corey Bourne said the project – constructed through Cultural Heritage Management Plans to assess potential impacts on heritage sites – ensures the Heathcote community has access to a safer and more environmentally friendly way to manage wastewater.

“A lot of planning, investigations, design, assessments, approvals and community consultation goes into a project like this,” said Mr Bourne.

“By expanding our sewer network, we ensure wastewater is safely contained and transported to our Heathcote Water Reclamation Plant, where it is treated and reused for irrigation.

“We worked with the Taungurung Land & Waters Council, the traditional owners in the area, to carry out field investigations and dig test pits along the proposed pipeline alignments.”

In addition to creating a healthier and safer environment, the project will also allow for future development and growth for Heathcote, with 150 properties already expected to connect and more to come as vacant lots are developed.

Coliban Water said it will inform property owners within the next fortnight to outline the process on how to connect to the network.
