As the biggest wastewater infrastructure project in New Zealand, the Central Interceptor tunnel will travel from Grey Lynn to the Māngere Wastewater treatment Plant.
The project is being delivered by the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture (JV) and the project’s TBM has been assembled at Herrenknecht’s factory in Schwanau, Germany, over the past 10 months.
Named ‘Hiwa-i-te-Rangi’ after one of the Matariki stars, the TBM is 190 m long and 5.47 m in diameter.
With extensive testing now complete, Hiwa-i-te-Rangi will begin work on the 14.7 km tunnel early in 2021.
