Vale Ted Flaxman

Prior to the establishment of ISTT, Ted was President of the Institution of Public Health Engineers (IPHE) and chaired the organising committee of the IPHE Conference ‘Trenchless Construction for Utilities’ – the first no-dig event, in 1985.

In his concluding address at that conference, Ted proposed a series of international trenchless events, the formation of ISTT, an industry journal and an annual prize for innovation.

He subsequently served as Chair of ISTT from its establishment in 1986 through to 2003, and was a Guarantor until 2016.

Having had a distinguished career with Binnie and Partners (now Black and Veatch), he amassed a length list of accolades, including receiving the Kurose Award in 1993, being recognised with the UK Society for Trenchless Technology Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and winning ISTT’s Gold Medal in 1996.

Ted passed away on 8 December 2020 at the age of 92, leaving behind an immense legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
