100 HDD Viking Link begins

Balfour Beatty was awarded a £90 million ($161.2 million) contract in 2020 to deliver the onshore works for the Viking Link Interconnector Project for a National Grid and Energinet joint venture (JV).

The Viking Link will connect the British and Danish power grids at National Grid’s Bicker Fen substation, with Balfour Beatty to install 68 km of high voltage cabling underground.

The company said there will be a total of 100 HDDs carried out along the stretch, creating ducts under ditches and roads to enable the cable to continue through landlocked areas and avoid the need to dig from above ground, limiting disruption to the public.

The method will also be used at river crossings to avoid any obstacles along the cable route.

The wider Viking Link will run 765 km, supply sustainable electricity for 1.4 million homes in Great Britain and improve the security of electricity supply in both countries.

Works are scheduled for completion at the end of 2023.
