Cross River Rail launches TBM tracker

TBMs ‘Else’ and ‘Merle’ are currently excavating the tunnels from Woolloongabba north towards Albert Street, while two 115 t roadheaders are excavating the tunnels in the opposite direction from Woolloongabba towards Boggo Road.

The TBMs each weigh 1,350 t, are 165 m long and are lining the tunnel walls with 25,000 concrete segments as they excavate.

Cross River Rail’s new online TBM Tracker can now follow this progress thanks to trackers and sensors equipped to each machine, feeding technical information to the project team in real time.

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the data can be viewed on a computer or mobile device.

“With TBM Else and TBM Merle on their way north, and the project’s roadheaders excavating south, Cross River Rail’s year of tunnelling is well and truly underway,” he said.

“While progress on the transformational Cross River Rail project might be obvious above ground, what might not be appreciated or understood is just the sheer scale of work taking place beneath our feet.

“You can check out where our TBMs are, wherever you are, as they journey under the city.”

The TBMs are currently working at a rate of 20-30 m per day.
