The Don Irrigation Scheme is designed by Tasmanian Irrigation and will include the laying of 67 km one pipeline and the construction of three pump stations.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water Guy Barnett has announced that tenders have now closed for construction of the $29 million scheme.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($12.5 million) and the Tasmanian Government ($16.5 million).

The Don Irrigation Scheme will enable farmers to diversify, expand, increase rotations, and add additional infrastructure that will help the Tasmanian Government to reach its goal to increase the farm-gate value of the state’s agricultural sector to $10 billion by 2050.

Tasmanian Irrigation has delivered 133,000 megalitres of irrigation water to farmers around the state as well as progressed the first five irrigation projects as part of ’Tranche Three’

The successful tenderer will be announced within the month.

Construction of the Don Irrigation Scheme is expected to conclude and water forecast to flow in 2023.
